Yoga & Pilates
It is increasingly believed that sitting still at a desk for long periods of time can be detrimental to health and increase the risk of back pain and other musculoskeletal problems. Encouraging employees to move and stretch by attending a yoga or pilates class, is an ideal way of tackling this.
Yoga and pilates classes not only offer health benefits but also create a social focus for the workplace and encourage staff to take responsibility for their own health.
Yoga
Yoga is an ancient discipline and form of exercise, designed to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of yoga are postures (asanas) and breathing techniques. Yoga builds strength, stamina, balance and flexibility. The practice of yoga can also improve circulation and strengthen the immune system.
Pilates
Pilates is an exercise-based system that aims to develop awareness of the body’s ‘centre’, in order to create a stable core. Mat-work classes utilise a repertoire of exercises on a floor mat. Pilates can help to improve strength and flexibility, re-align and rebalance the body, improve posture and correct breathing. It is particularly good for people with back problems.
As well as the physical benefits of yoga and pilates, both practises can help with the reduction of stress and to develop confidence and a sense of wellbeing.
